CONELRAD
|
640 and 1240 kHz were the original frequencies for the CONELRAD early warning system instigated by President Harry Truman in 1951. The system was the precursor to the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) and eventually the Emergency Alert System (EAS).
CONELRAD stands for Control of Electromagnetic Radiation. Most AM radios of the day had markers at 640 and 1240 kHz to remind users where to tune in case of an imminent threat from Soviet bombers.
