Apex Broadcasting Band
|
In the mid 1930's, the U.S. FCC opened the band 41-44 MHz for wideband AM broadcasting. The band consisted of 75 channels spaced 40 kHz apart (compared to the standard 10 kHz spacing used in the traditional AM broadcast band). In 1939, the FCC encouraged Apex stations to move to the technologically superior FM broadcasting technology which, until after World War II, occupied the 42-50 MHz band.
The term "apex" apparently referred to the very tall height of the antennas used for Apex broadcasting. Coverage in the Apex band was originally expected to be line-of-sight, although interference over long distances did occur due to anomalous propagation conditions.
See the referenced Wikipedia article for more information on Apex.
